How to Become a Merit Badge Counselor

Complete the following:
1. Complete a Merit Badge Counselor Information Sheet. (Download) and list the Merit badges you can counsel.
2. Complete and sign a Scouting America Adult Application (Download), including your permission for a criminal background check. If you contact a member of the staff, they can send this as an online link, avoiding paper.'
3. Complete Safeguarding Youth Training and Print Certificate
  - Training can be completed at http://my.scouting.org
  - When registered, you will have to connect this training to your membership number.
Submit Required Documents and Youth Protection Training Certificate to the Council Service Center with the $25.00 National registration fee if the proposed counselor is not currently registered in a unit or at the District or Council level.
Wait for Approval from the Council Advancement Committee. You cannot begin until this approval is received from the Great Trail Council.
Verify your registration as a Merit Badge Counselor on your own by checking your registrations as explained below.

Where can I find a list of local merit badge counselors?

Scouts

Scouts BSA members seeking a counselor should talk to their Scoutmaster.

Unit leaders

Troop, crew and ship leaders can find the list of merit badge counselors on the unit page in Scoutbook. Scoutbook provides a search for merit badge counselors at that location. Your unit need not use Scoutbook to view the list. Log into http://scoutbook.scouting.org with your my.scouting userID and password, click on My Dashboard, Administration, your unit and scroll down the page. A downloadable list is not available at this time.

Council, District Scouters and Commissioners

Council and district committee members and Commissioners can find the list of merit badge counselors in my.scouting.org (Click on Roster then Reports).

Merit Badge Counselors

Merit badge counselors can find the badges they are approved to counsel by logging into http://scoutbook.scouting.org (use your my.scouting userID and password to login) and clicking on My Dashboard, My Account, My Positions.
